Abstract
The Somozas Mélange is a serpentinite mélange located in the lowest structural position of the Cabo Ortegal Complex. In the surrounding area of the Espasante village, an outstanding tectonic block of submarine metavolcanic rocks appears formed by broken pillow breccias, close-packed pillow lavas, hyaloclastites, basaltic andesites and doleritic dykes. A detailed petrographical and mineralogical study of the metahyaloclastitic rocks shows complex textural and mineralogical relationships. The mineral assemblage developed during metamorphic peak conditions is formed by muscovite+paragonite+quartz+garnet+kyanite+chlorite+epidote+hematite, with rutile, apatite and tourmaline as accessories. Margarite appears as a retrograde mineral formed after kyanite. The compositional characteristics of all these minerals are presented and it is suggested that they were developed during a high-P metamorphism event affecting the submarine volcanic rocks.
