Abstract
The aim of the study was to analyse the relationship between the parental conflicts perceptions and the present couple relationships among 456 college students. In order to obtain information about the parental conflict´s characteristics, participants filled the Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale (CPIC, Grych et al., 1992). Conflicts in the couple relationships were assessed with the Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationships Inventory (Wolfe et al., 2001). Results showed that the parental conflicts´ characteristics (frequency, intensity, resolution and content) were related to the use by the students of physical abuse, threatening behavior, and especially emotional abuse and negative strategies in general. They were also related to the use by their partners of threatening behavior, sexual abuse, and again, especially emotional abuse and negative strategies in general. The dimensions related to the appraisal of the parental conflicts (perception of threat, self-blame, and triangulation) were related to the use by the participants of the physical abuse, relational aggression, and especially, threatening behavior, emotional abuse and negative strategies in their couple relationships. Finally, they were related to the use by their partners of the threatening behavior, emotional abuse and negative strategies. To sum up, the study confirms the results obtained by other researchers about the role on the psychological adjustment of both the characteristics of the parental conflicts and the cognitive appraisal that children make of them.
