Abstract

The D. Saipanensis zone has been found in three sections in southern Spain. We have identified sixty calcareous nannofossil species and determined their relative abundance. The D. Saipanensis zone can be approximately correlated with the foraminfera Truncorotaloides rorhi zone, where we have identified twinty one planktic foraminfera species. The presence of calcareous nannofossils species characteristic of warm and cold waters allows us to establish an accurate biostratigraphy of the marly sediments of the middle Eocene of southern Spain. Some of the calcareous nannofossil taxa from out sections show a different statigraphical distribution than those described by other authors.
