Abstract

Chapter 125 of the third book of Scaliger's Poetica (Idea) deals with the theoric fundamentals of the epigram and describes its main types. A brief though fundamental Appendix is added to it. This renaissance author's thoughts were of prime importance in the development of the modern theory of a genre greatly cultivated in the latin literature of the sixteen and seventeenth centuries. Both Latin texts and translations are included.
