Resumen
A total four depositional sequences can be distinguished in the triassic Red Beds of the Tabular Cover of the Iberian Meseta (south central Spain). Sequences boundaries are related to changes in the sea level oscillations precisely established in the neighbouring Prebetic Zone. In the Almedina-Alcaraz area, Triassic sedimentation developed along a W-E palaeovalley, where a transverse system is recognized as a set of small alluvial fans lying against the Palaeozoic basement and a master, longitudinal fluvial system with braided and meandering channels developed. The shapes of the sandstone bodies as well as the degree of palaeosoil development in the flood plains are controlled by the sediment supply/accommodation ratio. That means they are closely influenced by the dynamics of sea level oscillations. This example sets up an excellent outcropping analogue for the TAGI oil reservoir, currently exploited in Algeria.
