Abstract

Charcoal and activated carbon have been prepared from kenaf core (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) coals. Activated carbons were then chemically modified with mineral acids and has also performed this modification on a microporous commercial activated carbon. The carbons thus prepared have been characterized and tested in various applications. The obtained from kenaf are characterized by being macroporous. The modified micropororus coal has been used as a catalyst in the synthesis of acetals, and have been tested different experimental conditions. Activated carbons have been used as adsorbents model aromatic compounds such as phenol and anisole. They have also been tested in purification of simulated water from boiler cork and as adsorbents for carbon dioxide in the gas phase. Finally they have been used in medical applications, such as removal of toxic orally ingested or existing inside the body as well as for controlled drug release.
