Resumen

The objective of this study is to describe the different editions of the ancient Pharmacopoeias which have been used in Spain, as well as their evolution and relationship with the pharmaceutical profession, through searching primary and tertiary sources. It is been 500 years now since the advent of the first Pharmacopoeia published in Spain in 1511 called Concordia Apothecariorum Barcinonensium and the first official" Pharmacopoeia published in 1601 by the College of Valencia called Officina Medicamentorum. Successive editions of Pharmacopoeias help us discover the history of Spanish pharmacy. Old Pharmacopoeias are texts from the past that contribute to valuing the pharmacy profession and, over the centuries, they have meant that apothecaries offered care based on science to many patients and they have reinforced the present and future image of the pharmacist. These ancient, important books have been and are currently an essential guide for pharmacists to conduct their professional work as experts in drugs.
