Abstract

Characteristics attributed to men and women may influence them to the point of determining what is correct or not, and may also influence the participation and the possibility of assuming different social roles. Traditionally, men have occupied public positions whereas women have centered their activities in the private scope. In this cross-cultural study we try to verify whether the fact of women and men occupying roles associated with the other gender influences the perception of stereotypes and power, and if this depends on the social transformations taking place in the context in which they find themselves. 720 people from Spain, Germany and the United States of America participated in our experiment. Among our results we found the perception that women have won more public power, and will continue doing so, and that they are attributed more masculine characteristics. This result is stronger in Spain than in Germany and U.S.A., and this is the reason why we assert there is an important effect of context.
