Abstract

Indirect prospecting techniques, such as geophysical surveys, are valuable tools in order to study the exploitation viability of mining deposits. In this work we aim to check the feasibility of one of these techniques, the Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI), to the assessment and quantification of ophitic rock bodies. These materials appear within olistolite masses included in a marly formation of Miocene age of the Guadalquivir Basin (Jaén province). In the profiles it is observed that the ophites have a relatively high electrical resistivity, in contrast with that of the clayey or marly lithologies that surround them. This contrast helps in deducing the morphology and the indepth extension of the rock bodies. There are another facies -ophitic blocks of small size surrounded by a clayey matrix- that is characterized by intermediate resistivities. In our study case, we are able to deduce, based on the ERI results, a limited continuity of the rock body with the depth. Boreholes drilled after our geophysical study allow the assessment of the information obtained.
