The aim of this work is to study the flow and recharge of the Ventós-Castellar aquifer (Alicante). This is a small karstic aquifer situated in the south-east part of the Iberian Peninsula, whose waters are used to supply the area around the city of Agost. The dynamic of the aquifer is very rapid, indicating a high degree of karstification. A mathematical model based on data of changes in the piezometric leve1 was applied, which highlighted the enormous influence that climatic factors exert in such Mediterranean aquifers having small recharge areas. It indicated that during dry periods the rates of recharge can fall below 1% of the total precipitation. Only high-intensity rainfall events lead to significant recharge in the aquifer. In general terms, we have established that the resources of these systems are very scarce, and that dry periods lead to falls in water levels that are not easily recovered in the short to medium term. For this reason, water pumping from this sort of aquifer must be made in a controlled way in order to avoid subsequent problems, which could be wrongly interpreted as indicating overexploitation.
