Resumen

The lack of surface hydric resources in Alicante province induces the frequent use o f underground waters. This part of Spain is characterised by the existence of numerous small aquifers, most of which are of karstic nature with limestones and dolomies from the Cretaceous. Detritic aquifers are less common and present worst hydraulic characteristics. According to the results from the project: "Quality network of the Alicante province subterraneanand surface waters", developed by the Chemical Engineering Department of Alicante University and the Diputación Provincial de Alicante, underground waters show, in general, a good quality, with less than I g/l of salinity in most cases. Furthermore, due to its karstic nature, most of the aquifers have a bicarbonated sodic facies and the waters are partially hard. Water level in most aquifers has decreased during the last decade due to the drought suffered in this part of Spain. However, although water has been more deeply extracted, its quality seems non-affected. The hydrochem ical facies neither seems to be changed and so, the water characteristics remain the same as a decade ago.
