Abstract
Drowning or near drowning is a common cause of death, especially in children. It may occur by two mechanisms: by aspiration of water or by asphyxiation by laryngospasm. The pathophysiology is defined by the onset of hypoxia and hypothermia, fundamentally. Complications can be multiple, especially cardiac and neurological. The correct application of resuscitation measures at the accident site itself may decrease mortality rates.
