Resumo
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of a multi-component exercise programme on different fitness and health indicators assessed in a group of 20 sedentary old women (age 57-75 yr). Measurements of structural indicators (weight and Body Mass Index), physical condition (flexibility, muscular strength and aerobic resistance) and biochemical profiles (total HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides blood levels) were assessed before and after performing a specific exercise programme (3 months, two 1-hour sessions per week). This program included cardiovascular resistance, muscular strength, and flexibility exercises. Both structural and physical indicators were significantly improved. No changes in the lipid profile were recorded. The study confirms the importance of promoting healthy physical exercise programs in older women. The benefits of performing enjoyable exercises that are not excessively demanding in terms of intensity, frequency and duration and that are adapted to the needs of participants is highlighted. Although these activities may improve the physical condition, they are not effective on the lipid levels that require exercise program with more vigorous physical impact.
