Resumo

The authors describe the characteristics of sunlight and radiation that affect the skin, burns from the sun and so-called idiopathic photodermatosis such as polymorphous light eruption, solar urticaria, hydroa vacciniforme, actinic prurigo and chronic actinic dermatitis. The concept of phototoxic or photoallergic reaction is exposed and protective measures against sunlight, based on avoiding direct sun exposure and the application of chemical, physical and biological agents in the exposed areas of the skin are described
