Resumen

The marine deposits outcropping in the Cuadix Basin (Betic Cordillera) are composed by three Upper Tortonian stratigraphic units. The two uppermost units (units II and III) have been interpreted as highstand and lowstand system tracts, respectively. Unit III is composed by two coeval shallow marine depositional systems: Cilbert-type delta and shelf. Both systems lie on the slope and deep pelagic deposits of Unit II. The sharp shallowing recorded between units II and III allows us to draw a relative sea-level fall triggered by a stage of fast tectonic uplift of the area. This sea-level fall carried out a basinward displacement of the coast-line, so defining a tectonically-forced regression in thetransition between units II and III. After that forced regression,the increasing sediment supply/ subsidence ratio gave way to a normal regression under lowstand conditions. This period is recorded by five stages of deltaic progradation and shelfal aggradation.
