Historical context, subtext, intertext, pre-text in Shakespeare's "The merchant of Venice"

Resumen

The dissertation is organised in three main areas. The first one delves on the relations of intertextuality between The Merchant of Venice and other previous or pre-texts through relations of intertextuality with works like: Gesta Romanorum, Il Peccorone by Giovanni Fiorentino and Christopher Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta. The second part is dedicated to illuminate aspects of historical resolution of social and economic import such as the birth of the first joint venture companies that are at the background of the play. A final chapter accounts for the edition of the play from the first Quarto to the First Folio edition with the an intention of making an introductory compilation of history of the play of The Merchant of Venice in an aim to make a brief historical account of the play’s first steps on the scene and on paper. La tesis está integrada en tres partes temáticas. La primera resulta de las relaciones de intertextualidad entre El Mercader de Venecia de Shakespeare y otros pre-textos como son Gesta Romanorum, de autoría desconocida, Il Peccoronne de Giovanni Fiorentino y El Judío de Malta de Christopher Marlowe. La segunda parte recoge y abunda en aspectos históricos de tipo social y económico que están en el trasfondo de la obra como es el surgimiento de las primeras compañías comerciales. El tercer bloque se dedica a hacer un breve repaso de la trayectoria de edición de la obra desde el primer Quarto a la primera edición en Folio a modo de acercamiento a la historia de la obra tanto en papel como en la escena.
