Abstract

This paper summarizes the stratigraphic analysis of the Tertiary sediments of the Malaguide Domain in the Sierra Espuña area. These rocks form the uppermost stratigraphic unit of the highest tectonic units that have built the tectonic edifice of nappes of the Internal Zones of the Eastern Be tic Cordillera. From a stratigraphic standpoint, the Tertiary of Sierra Espuña is organized in two main ensembles of sediments: The Lower Sedimentary Cycle of the Malaguide Tertiary (LSCMT), Paleocene to Upper Oligocene in age, and the Upper Sedimentary Cycle of the Malaguide Tertiary (USCMT), Upper Oligocene to Aquitanian in age, that are bounded by a mayor unconformity related to a tectonic phase. The LSCMT is formed by four depositional sequences bounded by stratigraphic unconformities: the Paleocene Depositional Sequence (Mula Fm.), the Cuisian-lower Lutetian Depositional Sequence (Espuña Fm. and Valdelaparra Fm.), the Middle Lutetian-Priabonian Depositional Sequence (Malvariche Fm. and Canovas Fm.), and the late Lower Oligocene Depositional Sequence (As Fm.). The USCMT is formed by one depositional sequence (Bosque Fm. and Río Pliego Fm.).
