Résumé
In 1847 Spain’s first “General plan of Maritime illumination of the coasts and harbors of Spain and its surrounding isles” was developed, which aimed to establish a network of lighthouses along our coastlines. As a result of said plan, a hundred and five new lighthouses were erected with the purpose of guaranteeing a reference symbol on land for the navigator en route along the Spanish coastlines. In 1851 the Body of Lighthouse keepers was created, whose task consisted in observing the correct functioning of the lighthouse as well as maintaining the light in a perfect state of service and in exercising surveillance and give out warnings. The machinery and the housing where allocated in the same space, allowing for separate and independent rooms as well as common rooms. The juxtaposition of both functional plans offers a great number of residential solutions being subjected to the functioning of the “signal factory”: the lighthouse.
