Abstract

Objectives First, to characterize the clinical-demographical profile and therapeutic compliance of patients with osteoporosis (OP) in Primary Care (PC) and Hospitals (HO); second, to assess therapeutic and diagnosis compliance (TDC) of the SEIOMM guidelines, 2001. Methods Cross-sectional, epidemiological and multicenter study of 407 patients (205 PC/202 HO) with OP. Results In the hospital, a higher prevalence of vertebral fractures prior to the diagnosis (24.4% PC vs 35.6% HO, p=0.0132), higher percentage of patients with secondary OP and higher personal-dependence degree. HO patients showed more use of hormone replacement therapy (1.5% PC vs 5.4% HO, p=0.0275) and calcium supplement and/or vitamin D (80.7% PC vs 93.0% HO, p=0.0003). Treatment compliance (TC) was higher in HO (3.4% vs 10.6%, p=0.0074). TDC of SEIOMM guidelines was high (> 70%) in both clinical settings. Conclusions HO OP patients show more severity. In both settings there is a high level of TDC. However, TC is low.
