Abstract

The compatibility of Professional Dance Education with other studies, in most cases with Compulsory Secondary Education and Bachillerato, presents a situation of academic overload for students. This is due to the combination of classroom and nonclassroom hours of both areas of study. For this reason, the objective of this research is to find out, from a social, motivational, vocational and academic perspective, the characteristics and peculiarities of the students who study Professional Dance Education in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, to discover the support and influences that the social and family environment plays in the decisions of the students, as well as to investigate the academic difficulties derived from making both areas of study compatible. Quantitative research has been carried out via observation by survey, where the instrument used was a questionnaire designed ad hoc for all the variables to be measured, except for the measurement of Intrinsic Motivation, for which the EME-E (Núñez, Martín-Albo and Navarro, 2005) was used. The questionnaire was validated by content validity tests by expert judgement and Test-Retest reliability. Subsequently, it was administered to 315 students (288 females and 27 males) between 14 and 37 years old, belonging to the Conservatories of Professional Dance Education of Andalusia, being a probabilistic sample with simple randomization and stratified by province. Correlation analyses (Pearson’s r, Spearman’s ρ), contrast tests with Pearson’s chisquared test (χ2) and linear regression tests, among others, were carried out. As a conclusion, it can be stated that the majority of the students present certain academic difficulties when making both areas of study compatible, compensated by the vocational characteristics and the high Intrinsic Motivation that they have towards dance. The perceived support was significant on the part of the family and moderately low on the part of the teachers. Moreover, most of the students’ academic prospects coincide with the recommendation of their parents, in combining the Higher Dance Studies with another university degree. The results are discussed in this paper.
