Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between prediction of students’ intention to practice physical activity in their leisure time and motivation and autonomy support received in physical education classes. The sample consisted of 1298 high school students in Andalusia, Spain. The instruments used were the Spanish versions adapted to Physical Education of the Learning Climate Questionnaire, the Sport Motivation Scale and Intention to Partake in Leisure-time Physical Activity. To analyze the data, a structural equation model was conducted. The main findings highlighted that autonomy support essentially predicts intrinsic motivation and this is the greatest influence on the intention to practice physical activity in leisure time. The results of this study are relevant for Physical Education teachers’methodological organization of their classes, as well as promoting an active lifestyle among adolescents.
