Resumo

The main objective of the Doctoral Thesis has been to study the cognitive skills of volleyball players in Spain and Brazil. To this end, two instruments have been created and validated, one for the measurement of blocking decisions, and the other for the measurement of the tactical knowledge of volleyball players, in Brazil. In addition, the association between the aspects on which appropriate decision making is based on different volleyball playing actions and the category of play has been analysed, and a review and meta-analysis of the effect of decision training programmes, from a cognitive perspective, for the improvement of decision making in volleyball has been carried out. This Thesis has implications for both the training and the process of detecting and selecting sports talents. The tactical knowledge questionnaire can be used, together with other types of tests, in the process of detection and selection of talents. On the other hand, the instrument of observation of the blocking action can provide specific information about the decision making process that allows to adapt the decisional training process. Furthermore, thanks to the analysis of the specific decisional characteristics of the players, it provides valuable information for the adaptation of the teaching-learning process in the different categories. It also provides information on cognitive and/or perceptive programmes that can be applied during training, or in a complementary way, to improve the decision-making of volleyball players.
