Resum

The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to analyse the attribution of responsibility of aggressors condemned for gender-based violence, as well as to which extent certain emotional competencies such as emotional intelligence, empathy, and emotional dependence towards the partner, intervene in the aggressions. Specifically, the aim is to analyse the cognitive and emotional dimensions proposed; check the relationship between them; see if they present significant differences based on sociodemographic and criminal characteristics; and compare the results of cognitive and emotional competences with a control group of men who do not practice gender-based violence, in order to establish a discriminatory predictive model. With the purpose of expanding knowledge about the variables that influence gender-based violence in order to achieve more effective intervention programs, this research has used a sample of 128 men convicted of gender-based violence offences in prison. The control group is composed of 128 men from the general population with stable partners. The results indicate that the offenders do not have high levels of external responsibility and emotional dependence on their partners, nor do they have low emotional intelligence and empathy. The emotional variables are not correlated with the attributes of responsibility and there are some significant differences concerning sociodemographic and criminal variables. Highly significant differences have been obtained with the control group in all the variables and with this a discriminating predictive model has been elaborated that presents a high statistical validity.
