Abstract

The present paper reviews the basis upon which a scientific and technological culture was built in Bilbao, during the first quarter of the XXth Century. The role of the Industrial Engineer School, starting in 1899, is revisited. An analysis of the effect of the military revolt and victory of Franco¿s troops upon the professors¿ political depuration follows. The article concludes with some thoughts upon the causes of the war-driven historical memory loss in Bilbao¿s society, regarding the scientific and technological culture grown during the previous century. A coherence concept is pointed out as the best suited for a systemic approach to the subject.
