Abstract

A taxonomic revision of the genus Erysimum L. in Andalusia (Southern Iberian Peninsula) was carried out. We discuss the greater utility of the following taxonomic characters: shoot (size and branching), phyllotaxy, length of the raceme relative to the shoot in flower, flower size and color, siliquae (positíon relative to the axis, length of the style), and chromosome number. Three new ploidy levéis have been detected: 2n = 28 in E. popovii, In = 14 in E. medio- hispanicum subsp. medio-hispanicum, and 2n = 56 in E. baeticum subsp. baeticum. The results correct various ploidy levéis which have been erroneously ascribed to certain taxa, and indicate the presence of different ploidy levels within the same taxon. For each taxon the correct name, synonyms, type description, chromosome number, distribution, ecological habit, and a list of the material studied is given. We propose a new combination, E. mediohispanicum Polatschek subsp. rondae (Polatschek) Blanca & Morales, and a new taxon, E. baeticum (Heywood) Polatschek subsp. bastetanum Blanca & Morales.
