This paper examines the academic work of Luis Montoto y Rautenstrauch, a Spanish scholar born in Seville (1851-1929) who actively participated in the well-known “Folklore” movement. His study focused on idioms, and he laid the foundations of Phraseology as opposed to Paremiology. The objectives of our essay are four-fold: a) to explain the historical and intellectual context in which Montoto developed his work; b) to describe and analyze his phraseological contribution by focusing on three of his main works (Un paquete de cartas, De Modismos, Locuciones, Frases Hechas, Frases proverbiales y Frases familiares, 1888; Tiquis miquis. Al licenciado Don José Gestoso y Pérez. Carta en la cual se trata de más de doscientos personajes proverbiales, 1890; and Personajes, personas y personillas que corren por las tierras de ambas Castillas, 1911-1912); c) to systematize Montoto’s theoretical ideas on phraseology; and finally, d) to contribute to a better understanding of the Spanish phraseological tradition.
