Resum

Current periodontal research implicates inheritance in the pathogeny of periodontal disease in an increasingly direct manner. The development of genetic tests that predict the production capacity of inflammatory monokines as Interleukin-1 or Vitamin D Receptor polymorphisms for bone mass prediction has provided genetic markers that can help prevent the appearance of periodontitis in patients at risk and increase the success of treatment and/or maintenance in periodontal patients. The present review analyses the role of genetic inheritance in the different clinical forms of periodontitis. It can be concluded from the published data that inherited genetic characteristics can increase susceptibility to periodontal disease and worsen the response to treatment, through an increased stimulation of the patient's immune system in the presence of exogenous periodontal pathogens. A prior knowledge of the genetic markers in periodontal disease may be a ble to explain the patient response to treatment.
