Résumé

Gingival melanin hyperpigmentation causes aesthetic problems, especially in patients with "gummy smile". We used a classic mucoabrasion technique, described by Pérez Fernández in 1977, to treat a 29-year-old female with no medical history of interest who presented with multiple melanin stains on the vestibular mucosa of maxilla and mandible and requested aesthetic treatment to restore normal gum appearance. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical studies revealed intense hyperpigmentation of the basal layer of the epithelium and scant presence of melanin in melanophages of the lamina propria, leading to the diagnosis of gingival melanosis secondary to tobacco use. This work presents the evolution and outcome of the patient and compares the mucoabrasion technique with alternative therapies.
