Abstract
Aluminum and their alloys present good mechanical properties, high electrical and thermal conductivity and low cost of machining that makes them an excellent choice for a wide range of applications. However, when they are exposed to aggressive environments, localized corrosion takes place limiting their applications. In this work, glass-like ceriumbased coatings have been prepared using cerium nitrate and various complexing agents. CexOy coatings were deposited by dip-coating and heat treated at 120 °C for different times. Different techniques were used to characterize the structural and corrosion properties (thickness, roughness, contact angle, adhesion and standard corrosion tests). Homogeneous coatings with thickness between 570 and 900 nm have been prepared as a function of the heat treatment. All the substrates properly respond to adhesion assays and salt spray test (SST).
