La medición del tiempo de reacción en los estudios con personas mayoresnecesidad de un acuerdo terminológico

Resum

Actualmente são numerosos os estudos cujo objectivo é quantificar e/ou melhorar o tempo de reacção de pessoas idosas, por considerar-se um biomarcador de envelhecimento cognitivo relacionado com a demência e inclusivamente com a mortalidade. Contudo, a falta de um critério único face ao termo tem sugerido que diversos autores não o empreguem correctamente. Deste modo, o objetivo da revisão foi determinar o procedimento utilizado com mais frequência para avaliar o tempo de reacção nos estudos com pessoas idosas, assim como analisar se o termo tem sido empregue de forma adequada. Após serem analisadas as bases de dados Scopus, PubMed y PsycINFO (Janeiro de 2008 a Junho de 2013), foram incluídos um total de 84 artigo originais. Os resultados revelaram que a maior percentagem dos estudos utilizou o teste de tempo de reacção simples com a pessoa sentada com os membros superiores sobre um botão, o qual tinham que pressionar ao detectarem o estímulo visual. Em relação ao uso do termo tempo de reacção, constatou-se a existência de uma confusão terminológica, devido ao facto de que na maioria dos estudos a medição foi incorrecta por incluir a fase de tempo de movimento. Deste modo, consideramos fundamental consciencializar para a necessidade de um acordo unanime face ao termo, o que favorecerá, entre outros, o progresso da investigação do tempo de reacção como aliado contra o envelhecimento cognitivo.
