Abstract
This chapter examines the factors that have favored the rise of self-proclaimed Islamic State (Daesh). After studying the historical evolution of Daesh the chapter focuses on four aspects: its paramilitary capabilities, political context, financing and transnational projection. The chapter ends with brief predictions and recommendations.
