Abstract
Learning strategies, as an important individual variable, are becoming central in second language acquisition research. First, this paper presents a brief review of the first strategies studies highlighting the lack of a coherent theoretical frame for the investigation of learning strategies. Then, on the basis of a review of the present conception of learning strategies and the main characteristics of these, we advocate for the introduction of integrated and informed strategy training in language pro grammes. This, we maintain, can be done through the analysis of the strategies implicit in the materials currently used in the promotion of language acquisition. Nine axioms for successful strategy training are also presented.
