Abstract

Objetive: The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 and sorne clinical and pathological parameters in oral SCC. Method: 37 oral biopsies from patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma were studied. Along with clinical and histopathological parameters, HPV 16 DNA was analyzed using the polymerase chain reaction ( PCR) technique. An amplified region of E6 ORF was hybridized with a 3' end-labelled oligonucleotide probe. Results: 11 out of 37 (29. 7%) tumors hybridized with HPV 16 DNA sequences. Conclusions: Our results subgest an aetiological implication of HPV-16 in oral SCC genesis. HVP-16-negative tumors presented statistically most frequently with maximal keratin production, compared to positive tumors.
