Resumen

The purpose of the study was to compare panoramic-radiography with bite-wing radiography (reference) in diagnosing approximal dental caries. Ninetyseven children (2476 approximal surfaces), without fillings, were included, with one panoramic- and two posterior bite-wing-radiographs from each child. Kappa statistic was adequate both for deciduous (k=0.84) and permanent (k=0.69) dentition; nevertheless, sensitivity was low (0.84 and 0.57 in deciduous and permanent dentition, respectively). Results in this study indicate that panoramic- radiography is not enough for proximal-caries diagnosis, particularly in permanent dentition.
