Abstract

lt remains still unknown why an individual is an oral breather. A great number of factors can cause this type of breathing, one cuold be the adenoid hipertrophism due to air way reduction. We have studied a group of 150 individuaIs with class I, II and III malocclusions. The aim was to see if there were any relationship between adenoid surface and upper air way in the mentioned malocclusions and also to know whether it is a significative influence between adenoid surface increase and certain mandibular growth patterns. The results show a bigger quotient adenoid surface/air way in class II and class III than in class l. Open goniac angle and vertical mandibular growth were seen in individuals with adenoid surface predominance. Some more research is needed to know how the upper air way permability could influence over the facial growth.
