What is behind envy? Approach from a psychosocial perspective

Resumen

La envidia influye poderosamente en numerosas esferas de la vida social. No obstante, la psicología de la envidia se encuentra aún en una fase inicial. Se realiza una aproximación teórico-empírica al estudio de la envidia con un enfoque psicosocial y mediante la realización de dos estudios exploratorios. En el Estudio 1 (N = 141) se pidió a los participantes que describieran un evento en el que experimentaron envidia, indicando a qué personas envidiaban y los motivos desencadenantes. En el Estudio 2 (N = 311) se analizó la relación existente entre la envidia y algunas variables psicosociales como la autoeficacia, la autoestima y el control percibido, así como la predisposición a la manifestación de comportamientos agresivos en respuesta a dicha emoción. Los resultados del Estudio 1 revelaron que los amigos eran las personas más envidiadas, constituyendo las habilidades o competencias personales el motivo que más frecuentemente suscitaba la envidia. Asimismo, los resultados del Estudio 2 mostraron que la autoeficacia, la autoestima y el control percibido predecían la envidia, la cual, además, predecía la emisión de comportamientos agresivos verbales.
