Abstract
Contingency tables are an important tool for summarizing the information, learning and data analysis concepts; however several studies described the difficulties of the students. In this paper, we describe a teaching experience of contingency tables, assessing learning a topic in a sample of 93 students the first year of Psychology degree. Is presented by way of assessment results in six multiple-choice items and an open problem, which indicate successful learning, acquisition of formal strategies and overcoming local causal conception about the association, conceptions described by Estepa (1994). The evaluation had a diagnostic purpose and the results would be used to propose appropriate educational activities to improve the teaching in the future. We present a description of the strategies and solutions provided by students in the questions asked in the open problem.
