Abstract

From 1492 dates the erection in Granada of the hermitage of San Gregorio, justy in a corner of the Alcazaba Qadima, well connected with the low city. It was, therefore, one of the first Christian temples in the newly conquered Granada. This enclave was also linked to the martyrdom of Franciscan friars during the Nasrid period. It was considered to be a burial place for Christians. But simultaneously the hermitage was dedicated to San Gregorio Bético, bishop of Granada in early Christian epoch, considering that his mortal remains could also rest in that place. The mixture of both traditions is not accidental. It answers to the desire to link the new Church of Granada to the old one. But this Counter-reformist discourse left the interests of the Franciscan order out of play. The documentation provided reveals the prominence that the Franciscans had in that primitive hermitage, which was crucial for the historical tradition of the Church of Granada.
