Abstract
During the nineteenth century, Spain (particularly Andalusia) became the quintessential destination for any traveler. Although there are extensive studies about English speaking and Central European travelers, only a few have analyzed the experience of Latin American ones. Writers as Colombian Soledad Acosta de Samper or Chilean politician Rafael Sanhueza Lizardi describe in their memoirs their impressions of Spain. Their descriptions were conditioned by their relationship with the former metropolis, their vision of Spain’s Islamic past, their lack of contact with with the ‘Orient’ and its myth.
