Zusammenfassung
Most of the historical pigments are minerals or their synthetic equivalents that have been artificially produced by various methods throughout history. A brief description of them is presented in this paper. Mineralogical studies on pictorial materials allow to know the nature, the working methods used and the processes of alteration undergone by the artwork. Techniques commonly used in Mineralogy such as polarizing optical microscopy, analytical scanning electron microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence have proven their efficiency for the determination of the number, type and color of the preparatory layers, base and pictorial layers, as well as for the textural study and characterization of their inorganic constituents. All these aspects are essential for the authentication, dating, preservation and restoration of pictorial artworks
