Contractional and extensional tectonics in the Gibraltar Arc accretionary prism (Western Betics)

Resumen

The Gibraltar Arc accretionary prism is formed by an arcuate fold-and-thrust belt, involving the South Iberian and Maghrebian paleomargins and the Flysch Trough Complex. Contractional structures within the prism, that is in the footwall of the Gibraltar Thrust, result from the westward migration of the Alboran Domain from the lower Miocene, partly accomplished by means of this main thrust. In Ronda area (western Betics), middle Miocene low- to moderateangle faults affected the accretionary prism. These faults are thought to be associated with the middle Miocene rifting which led to the Alboran Basin formation, in the internal part of the Gibraltar Arc, and which occured at the same time as the accretionary wedge formed in the external part. Then, (negative) tectonic inversion of the Gibraltar Thrust took place and extension migrated outward.
