Resumen

In the continental deposits of the area of Tollo de Chiclana (Guadix Basin, SE Spain), several new fossiliferous Pliocene localities have been identified, that have yielded a rich rodent and insectivore fauna. These micromammal associations have allowed us to determine the age of the localities (Late Ruscinian for the oldest sites, Late Villafranchian for the younger ones). In addition, the presence of certain taxons with particular ecological requirements and the changes in the abundance of the various taxonomic groups provide a valuable information about the ecological conditions during the deposition of these materials. The fauna from the Upper Ruscinian and lowermost Villafranchian localities reflect a rather warm and humid climate, as well as the presence of woody vegetation. On the other hand, the micromammal associations from the uppermost Lower Villafranchian and Upper Villafranchian sites suggest a cooler and drier climate, together with the predominance of open environments.
