Abstract

The use of in-depth probes for pre-tcsting questionnaires has been advocated by a growing number of survey methodologist. Thc in-depth probes are better suited to identifying shortcomings in the questions than traditional field testing. This study present a sample of evidences obtained from pre-testing a CASI questionnaire of health and HIV-related behaviour. 40 males and females participate in the study. Participants were first asked to answer the CASI questionnaire. They were then asked two in-depth probes: cognitive interview and focus group. Both in-depth probes provide relevan! evidences for analyzing how participants had interpreted the questions. Also provide information about acceptability of sensitive questions and the altitudes toward mude of survey administration. Furthcr methodological research is need on advantages and cost of theses procedures from a practica! point of view.
