Abstract

Background: This essay is aimed to test the hypothesis that children who have been exclusively breastfed for a longer period of time, get higher scores in intelligence tests. We analyze the potential association between the duration of exclusive breastfeeding and k-Bit test scores in 6-year-old schoolchildren. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 103 mother-child pairs selected by simple random sampling procedure among mothers with 6-year-old children attending primary school in the province of Granada between September 2010-june 2011. The sample consisted of 103 6-year-old schoolchildren, 47 boys and 56 girls. Results: The estimated scores for the K-Bit Test, an estimate of Intelligence Coefficient, show an statisti-cally significant association between duration of exclusive breastfeeding and K-Bit test scores (p=0,000).Conclusion: We observed a significant association between exclusive breastfeeding duration and K-Bit test scores at 6 years.
