Abstract

In volleyball, the attack is the most successful action; therefore, it would be interesting to study its probability of error. Likewise, both rally length and player role seem to be related to success. The aim was to determine the likelihood of attack error according to the rally length and attacking player. 5186 terminal actions (798 attack errors (ATT=)) from the 2010 World Championship were registered with the observational software VA-Sports (Sports Software Development, Leon, Spain). A classification tree analysis was carried out (p<0,001), showing the highest ATT= probability for receivers and opposites in rallies longer than 4 seconds, whereas the lowest ATT= probability was for middle hitters in rallies with the same length. In conclusion, the longer the rally, the higher the probability of receivers and opposites of failing with their attacks and the lower for middle blockers, which emphasizes the importance of the latter in longer rallies.
