Resumen

The first results from the isotopic analyses of 13C/12C and 18O/16O on the continental carbonates of the central sector of the Guadix Basin (Betic Cordillera, S. Spain) strengthen the previous sedimentologic interpretations of these materials. There is a high degree of scatter (r2 =0.32) between isotopic values for δ13C and δ18O in the case of calcretes and paleosol nodules, with average values of δ13C (mean= -7.24‰; range -9.01 to -5.19‰) and δ18O (mean= -6.79‰; range -9.28 to -4.33‰), indicating that both isotopes were controlled by different factors. Palustrine carbonates show a moderate correlation (r2 =0.51) between δ13C (mean= -7.51‰; range -4.77 to -8.85‰) and δ18O (mean= -6.86‰; range -8.60 to -4.82‰) values. Taking into account the available sedimentologic data, this correlation may be interpreted as the influence of evaporation in a wetland system developed on a floodplain, in which new water input would be determined by overflows of the axial fluvial system.
