Abstract
This paper summarized the results obtained from geotechnical tests of samples belonging to the San Cayetano formation (Loja, Ecuador). The peculiarity of this formation is the important concentration of slope instabilities, in special around road slope. This formation is located in the eastern of the Loja Basin. In terms of lithology, it is composed by sandstones, conglomerates, lutites, coal-layers, diatomite layers and pyroclasts. The chemical and mineralogical composition of each sample has been defined by fluorescence tests and X-ray diffraction. Geotechnical laboratory tests have allowed us defining their mechanical properties. Materials of this formation are used for embankments cores, therefore it is necessary a knowledge of their strain and deformational behavior. The triaxial test allows us to identify the necessary geotechnical parameters in order to define the hyperbolic model which has been used for the mechanical characterization of the San Cayetano formation.
