Resum

A great deal has been written about reading, though most of it does not relate to the reading of a foreign language (FL) or second language (SL). In the same way, a great deal of research has been done, though its classroom applications are not always clear. On the contrary, reading is for many students the most important of the four skills in a foreign or second language. Thus, effective reading in SL or FL is crucial. This paper takes up some of the key theoretical and empirical perspectives on the nature of reading and learning to read. We then look at ways in which this theoretical and empirical work has found its way into the EAP classroom context through teaching materials, techniques and strategies. Among the different strategies for reading efficiently, we make a selection of those that have to do with reading for information. We finally talk about the application of these strategies to two different types of reading: extensive and intensive.
