Resumo

The retrieval of parasites from ancient material in archaeological contexts allows us to take an innovative approach to Physical Anthropology. Due to its cosmopolitan character, the parasitological presence has been evidenced in all studied cultures. Since the beginnings of this discipline, the analysis of human material represented the main source for ancient parasites’ research. In this way, Sir Marc Armand Ruffer (1910) started a new path on anthropological studies, highlighting their multidisciplinary nature to complement anthropological studies. Paleoparasitology, which is considered an area of Paleopathology, provides a complementary vie won health and disease conditions in health and disease in ancient populations. It also provides evidence of socio-economic conditions, dietary habits and mobility patterns. This article briefly outlines the various advances made in this discipline and how it has become a major tool in the study of individuals and their life conditions.
