Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common tumor in western countries and the second leading cause of cancer death. However, CRC is a disease that can be prevented. The prevention and early diagnosis programs of CRC based on fecal occult blood test have demonstrated the reduction of mortality and the incidence of CRC in the populations in which it has been applied. Colonoscopy performed in the context of CRC screening is performed on healthy and asymptomatic individuals, and its performance should guarantee these individuals that they are free to get a CRC for a period of time that reaches 10 years. Units where screening colonoscopies are performed must meet minimum necessary quality requirements. But the screening program does not end with the performance of the colonoscopy, since after performing it, it is necessary to ensure the correct monitoring of the population with risk, in addition to all those people with hereditary syndromes that will be identified throughout this process . With this document, the Andalusian Society of Digestive Pathology intends to establish, based on the available evidence, the minimum essential conditions for the implementation of the CRC Screening Program and serve as a guide for those units and services that have began the program or will implement it in the future.
